First day of the Triduum, the three holiest days of the year, Holy Thursday-commemoration of the
Lord’s Supper. What makes this supper different from the rest? Two important actions of Jesus stand out. One: He summarizes his preaching in action-washing the feet of his disciples. “Whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be the slave of all. For the son of man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (Mk.10:44-45) Jesus has loved us to the end. Greater love has no man than this, to lay down his life for his friends. Second: He became the source of salvation for all by offering his body and blood in anticipation of his total offering on the cross. That is, by instituting the Holy Eucharist he became food for our nourishment at all times. The Eucharist both proclaims and prefigures the death and resurrection of Jesus.
